About The Emergent City:
The increase of technology infrastructure in the daily existence of a city means that technology will, more than ever be everywhere in our environment. Mobile data mining will be part of the fabric of our contemporary global city landscape. We will be carrying this data in pods, phones and ID cards. Everything will be tracked, CCTV, car sensors, tracking inside our phones and ID cards, population movement, tracking in the guise of anti-terror activity. The patterns we make, the forces we weave, are all being networked into retrievable data structures that can be sourced for information.
Analysis of these patterns can disclose new ways of seeing the world and new ways of understanding it. Uses of this information and data, allow rich new interpretations on the way our world is built, used, and designed, now and in the future. The possibility exists to expand our perception of the city as a dynamic network.
Questions and Problems
- Can we consider data (CCTV, traffic, weather, people movement) as a medium for artistic practice?
- How can this information be meaningfully represented as artworks to an audience?
- How can this data be displayed in new and original ways?
- Do the results create new ways of understanding the city space?
My aim is to:- Develop ways to collect, present and interpret data which is embodied in city space, incorporating the findings of my research, and to create audio visual artworks which provide opportunity for new ways of seeing. I will mediate collected data into artworks which respond to the ‘city’ and its concurrent, measurable sensory ‘behaviours’.
