Regeneration Squares. By Stanza. Re-animating and remapping the city.
Intervention
This project involved the artist Stanza making a series of new public squares in the city. Here are a selection of these new squares in Liverpool. In addition the public are invited to find and re-discover these squares as urban wanderers (flaneurs) and intervene to create new situations and regenerate these spaces over again. Using the map one can wander around the city to find the spaces and the public squares made by Stanza. Each new public square measures 1 square foot and is big enough to stand in. You can use the map to find the squares in the city or wander around at random. If you make new things in these spaces or make your own squares send me some photos.
Where is Liverpool; where is the heart and soul of the city.
On returning to Liverpool I was struck by the concrete fields the same ones I remembered from twenty years earlier....nothing seemed to have changed in the city. Infact Liverpool is a city that seems abandoned. (Apart from the commercialism of the new L1, the third cathedral of the city, a monument to shopping, in a city with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country).
This Project was part of "The Golden Opportunity" programme at FACT (Foundation Of Art And Creative Technology) which supports a series of arts interventions to address issues that have a negative impact on people’s experience of attending city centre venues. The main aim of the programme is to explore how arts interventions in the city can make a significant contribution to creating a more people friendly city centre.
The programme of artworks I made is intended to engage with planners, community safety teams, and others involved in the management and development of Liverpool city centre, in order to encourage them to consider working with artists more extensively in future.
