From Control To The City Of Bits. Selected Paintings Stanza 1988 - 2018.

This series of artworks represent forty years of painting that sit alongside Stanza's digital and media based artworks and are an exploration into the urban landscape. The micro city becomes an organic networks of grids. The form and content of this work is a visual world of the city and its structure. Networks of information technology are contrasted with organic networks and city networks. This organic interplay is contrasted with man made structures, as well as patterns and forms of urban design. The city itself is always changing; it is always in flux. Each aspect of city life seems to demonstrate specific characteristics, which can be developed into individual parts of the labyrinth, making up the images that will be used. A city experience consists of small unit blocks and cells which inter-relate and lock together to form the composite city identity. The city has moved from metropolis to megalopolis to the ecumenopolis. The city is everywhere, with lifeless design spreading upwards and forming a conundrum of physical objects in space. The cities we inhabit disclose our behaviour in these systems. What you see in the artworks are fused layers of city patterns in the form of hybridised imaginary cities. These lines, grids, and shapes form the design of the city. Stanza sees these forms as the marks we have made and left behind on the landscape as drawing. In essence the artworks could be said to represent the scars on the landscape that we have created by our living actions or agency.
