The Reconfiguration Variations (2006)
The Reconfiguration Variations is a series of computational artworks by Stanza exploring computational creativity, algorithmic authorship and the reinterpretation of art history.Using paintings by Old Masters from national galleries and collections around the world, Stanza developed a bespoke generative system that remixes their colours, forms, shapes and visual structures to produce new digital compositions.
The software operates as a system for making art from art. Rather than reproducing existing paintings, the algorithm selects, processes and recombines their visual elements to create alternative interpretations of familiar works. The resulting images occupy a space between reference and reinvention, questioning originality, authorship and the authority of the historical image in an age of computational production.
Generated in real time, each composition emerges from a set of algorithmic rules governing the selection and transformation of visual material. The software becomes an instrument for reworking the past, producing millions of possible paintings and opening up new ways of experiencing and interpreting the visual language of art history.
Developed in 2006, the series anticipates contemporary debates around artificial intelligence, machine creativity and the relationship between human cultural production and automated systems. Historical paintings become source material for a computational process in which the machine participates in the creation of new artistic possibilities.
Exhibition and installation
The series comprises 30 software artworks, with selected online examples available from 26 works. Ideally presented across a bank of plasma or LCD screens, the installation brings multiple generative processes together, creating a collective display of algorithmically reconfigured paintings.
Each work is available as a signed artwork, supplied on disk with an offline version and the artist’s bespoke software system.
